Manufacturer: Seagate

Model: Seagate FreeAgent Desktop – ST3500830AS

Capacity: 500GB

Customer States: The drive was dropped and is no longer recognized by the PC.

Evaluation: A cleanroom exam showed the drive had failed heads, and minor platter damage.

Recovery Process: Data recovery for this dropped Seagate FreeAgent required replacement parts and a headswap in our ISO Class 5 Cleanroom. The drive was stabilized and the service area was partially backed up. Repairs were made for specific system files before the file system was accessible. The client’s critical data was mapped and cloned sector by sector to minimize reading damaged areas of the platters. Non-damaged sectors were identified and read first and then we used specialized reading techniques to recover the remaining sectors.

Important Notice:
If a drive has been dropped or is beeping, clicking, grinding or making other unusual noises, even if faint, continued use can make data recovery more difficult or permanently impossible. Avoid running repair utilities or repeatedly reconnecting the device, as this can further damage physical components.

Results: 100% of the client’s data was recovered.
