Every year, Backblaze publishes one of the largest datasets on hard drive reliability. Their 2025 report covers hundreds of thousands of drives running in real-world data center conditions.
It’s one of the best sources we have—but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.
If you’re trying to decide which drive to trust with your data, here’s what actually matters.
The Big Picture: Drives Are Getting Better
The overall failure rate in 2025 continues a long-term trend:
modern drives are, on average, becoming more reliable.
Higher-capacity drives (16TB and up) are performing especially well, which is the opposite of what many people expect. Newer designs and firmware are clearly helping.
But this is where people start drawing the wrong conclusions.
Important: This Is NOT a Controlled Study
Backblaze’s data is extremely valuable—but it’s not randomized.
They are:
- Using specific models they purchase
- Running them in their own environment
- Deploying them in large storage arrays
That means:
- Some models are overrepresented
- Some drives are used longer than others
- Environmental factors (vibration, workload, airflow) are not equal

Reliability Still Varies a Lot by Model

Not all drives are equal—even within the same brand.
Some models show extremely low failure rates, while others spike much higher. Older models, especially in the 8TB–12TB range, tend to show more issues as they age.
This lines up with what we see in actual recovery cases:
- Aging drives fail more unpredictably
- Certain models show repeat patterns of failure
- Firmware revisions can make a noticeable difference
What This Means in the Real World
1. No Drive Is “Reliable Enough” to Skip Backups
Even the best-performing drives still fail.
If you’re relying on a single device—even a “top-rated” one—you’re taking a risk. This is why we constantly stress having a proper backup strategy.
2. Age Matters More Than Brand
A newer drive from an average model is often safer than an older drive from a “reliable” one.
In recovery work, a large percentage of failures happen in drives that are:
- 4–7 years old
- Still in active use
- Never proactively replaced

In small business or home setups, risks can be higher due to:

Despite the limitations, the report is still extremely valuable for:
- Spotting long-term reliability trends
- Identifying outlier models with high failure rates
- Understanding how drives behave at scale
Just don’t use it as a simple “buy this brand, avoid that brand” guide.

The 2025 data confirms two things that haven’t changed:
- Drives are improving overall
